AI Feature Scoping

Can they write a product spec for an AI feature that includes data requirements, expected failure modes, evaluation criteria, and a rollback plan? We probe for the difference between a PM who says "add AI recommendations" and one who can spec the full system — including what "good" looks like when the model is wrong 15% of the time.

Vendor & Technology Evaluation

When presented with an AI vendor claim, can they ask the right questions? We test whether they know to ask about training data, latency, cost per inference, model refresh frequency, and what happens to their data. PMs who score well on this criterion save their companies months of wasted integration work.

Stakeholder Communication

Can they translate technical AI constraints into business language? When engineering says "we need more labeled data," can the PM explain to leadership why that means a three-month delay rather than a three-week one? This skill is increasingly the bottleneck in AI product delivery.

Risk & Limitation Awareness

Do they understand hallucination risks, model drift, data freshness problems, and edge cases before they ship? Or do they discover these in production? We assess whether PMs have internalized that AI products fail differently from traditional software — gradually, unpredictably, and often silently.

A PM who understands that an AI feature needs a feedback loop for model improvement scores much higher than one who treats the model as a black box.

We test whether PMs can identify when a vendor demo is cherry-picked, when a claimed accuracy number is misleading, and when an AI solution introduces more complexity than it solves. What Good vs. Poor Looks Like

Consistent patterns from PM assessments. These signals reliably predict AI product competency.

Strong signal (score 7-10)

  • +Discusses AI features in terms of data requirements and quality thresholds, not just user outcomes. Knows that "personalised recommendations" means nothing without specifying the signal, the model, and the fallback.
  • +Can describe a time they pushed back on an AI feature because the data was not ready, the use case was forced, or the risk profile was too high. Shows they have actually shipped (or deliberately not shipped) AI.
  • +Unprompted, considers edge cases: what happens with low-data users, what happens when the model is wrong, how do you measure success beyond click-through rate.
  • +Has a framework for evaluating AI vendors: asks about training data provenance, model update cycles, latency guarantees, and data handling policies.

Weak signal (score 1-4)

  • -Talks about AI purely in terms of user benefits without any awareness of what is needed to deliver them. "We will use AI to predict churn" — but cannot explain what data, what model, or how to measure accuracy.
  • -Treats AI as deterministic software. Expects it to work the same way every time, does not account for probabilistic outputs, and has no plan for when the model is wrong.
  • -Cannot differentiate between AI vendor claims. Accepts benchmark numbers at face value without asking about methodology, dataset, or real-world performance.
  • -No mention of responsible deployment: bias testing, user consent for AI-driven decisions, content moderation, or regulatory compliance. Treats AI features like any other feature.

The Conversation Approach

AISA does not quiz PMs on technical definitions. It has a product conversation — the kind they would have with an engineering lead or a CTO evaluating their roadmap.

A typical PM assessment explores products they have built or managed that included AI components, how they scoped those features, what trade-offs they navigated, and how they communicated constraints to stakeholders. The conversation might present a hypothetical product scenario and ask them to spec an AI feature on the spot — not for perfect answers, but for the quality of questions they ask and the failure modes they anticipate.

This conversational approach reveals something that certifications cannot: whether a PM has internalized AI constraints deeply enough to apply them under pressure. Memorizing that LLMs hallucinate is different from instinctively asking "what is the fallback when this model gives a confident wrong answer to a paying customer?" The Hiring Context

Product management job descriptions increasingly list "AI experience" as a requirement, but the industry has no standard for what that means. A PM who added a chatbot to a landing page and a PM who shipped a production ML recommendation engine both have "AI experience." The depth of understanding is completely different.

Worse, PMs are often the ones making buy-vs-build decisions for AI capabilities. A PM who cannot critically evaluate vendor claims will commit their team to months of integration work on a product that does not perform as advertised.
